Why SunSun Canister Filters Leak
SunSun canister filters rely on a rubber O-ring (seal) between the motor head and the filter body to keep water inside under pressure. Over time, several things can cause leaks:
When this happens, even a small gap can allow water to escape, usually dripping down the sides of the canister.
Vaseline (petroleum jelly) acts as a temporary lubricant and seal conditioner.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Short-Term Fix: Vaseline is safe for occasional use; however, because it’s petroleum-based, it can degrade rubber seals over time. For long-term care, use aquarium-safe silicone grease instead.
Replace When Needed: If your O-ring is cracked, brittle, or severely flattened, lubrication won’t help—it needs replacing.
Avoid Excess: A light coat is sufficient; excessive application can attract dust or compromise the seal.
Regular Maintenance: Inspect and lubricate the O-ring every few months to extend its life and prevent leaks.
